1. introduction1.1 introduction of the novelgone with the wind is written by margaret mitchell.the story is set in clayton county and atlanta, both in georgia, in the course of the american civil war and reconstruction era.the main character scarlett's spirit of constant self-improvement, hardworking and rebelliousness reflects her awakening of female consciousness as well as her pursuit of autonomous right.during war time, she bravely protects her families and makes a living.during the reconstruction era she breaks the fetter of women.the fetter is the traditional thought in the society about women.she makes money and realizes self-value. runaway is written by alice munro.the first story is named runaway, the same as the book.it tells the main character carla's twice experiences of runaway.for the first time, she "runaway" for her love.the second time, her "runaway" aims to escape from the marriage which makes her depressed.however, she fails the second time.when she tries to runaway, her thought reflects the awakening of female consciousness.1.2 introduction of the authormargaret mitchell was an american author, who won the pulitzer prize in 1937 for her novel gone with the wind. the novel is one of the most popular books of all time, selling more than 30 million copies. she has been honored by the united states postal service with a 10 great americans series postage stamp.alice munro is the author of the beggar maid (shortlisted for the booker prize), one novel and several collections of stories, most recently open secrets( winner of the wh smith literary award). she is the winner of the giller prize and the governor generals prize in her native country. she was the winner of the nobel prize in literaturein 2013.1.3 feminism and consciousnessfeminism first appeared in france, then spread to britain and america, and gradually became popular. it means women's social equality and individual liberation. feminism is a combination of theory and practice. it is a belief and ideology of equality between men and women. feminist ideas are based on the belief that the current society is based on a male-centered patriarchal system.consciousness is a spiritual activity with people as the main body.from the perspective of the female subject, female consciousness includes two levels: one is to understand themselves, to determine who they are, know the essence of life and their status in society.the second is to look at the external world from the perspective of women, and to understand and grasp the characteristics of women's life.with the development of the three feminist movements, women are gradually aware of the oppression or unfair treatment they receive in male society2.the need of the studynowadays, in our society there still exists some thoughts and phenomenon that are disadvantageous for women. for example, some companies do not employ female employees.these companies think that after the marriage the majority of the female employees will give birth to babies, which will hamper their work.it is difficult for women to get back to their work after fertility.even some elders asked the women to stay at home and look after her husband and baby.there are still some discriminations against divorced women.due to all the social problems above, some women have no choice but to quit their jobs and give up their pursuit of the realization of the self-value.this thesis is on the aspect of awakening of female consciousness and makes the comparison of two female characters, analyzes how the society and people around influenced them and analyzes the conditions which are beneficial for the awakening of female consciousness.3.literature review3.1 gone with the windboth at home and aboard, there are many researches on gone with the wind, many of which are about the female protagonist's character, female consciousness and translation.many scholars explored the feminist study, such as liu xinghui, who wrote a paper entiled analysis of the females consciousness in gone with the wind. in this paper, she analyzes how scarlett's female consciousness appears and why it has historical processes.guo peiyu in her work guo, p.y.(2019), analysis of the character of scarlett in gone with the wind.analyzes the relationship between scarlett's character and female consciousness.3.2 runawayvarious aspects such as theme, eco feminism, feminist study and the growth of the carla's female consciousness were explored.in fiona, t.(2010) , to leave and to return: frustrated departures and female quest in alice munro'srunaway,she analyzes that the cycles of departure and return that carla undergoes in runaway are not necessarily narratives of failure, but can be read as the inevitable moves.she believes that carla as a woman has no condition of independence.xiong wangmei(2014) points out in her work an eco-feminist interpretation of the goatthat the goat is the symbol of carla's female consciousness. she further discusses the relationship between human and nature, male and female. and in her thesis for the degree of master of artsan eco-feminist study of female escape in alice munro's runaway, lu yisha (2015) explores the reasons and types of runaway and further discusses the aim and solution.yan wenyu (2016), in his paper, awakening of female consciousness and disillusion, exposes the female protagonist's construction decomposition and disillusion.he further discusses the reason for the failure of runaway from subjective and objective aspect.the above studies have not compared runaway and gone with the wind in the aspect of female consciousness.this thesis will try to analyze how the society and people around affected them so that they could awaken the female consciousness, to get the conclusion of what women need when they will awaken the female consciousness.4. conclusionfirstly, i want to get the conclusion from this thesis is that, everyone should have faith for the future and life.just as introduction part in the runaway said, runaway, maybe it's the end of the past, maybe it's the start of the future, maybe it's a inappreciably moment.runaway is just like the relaxing path to the theater, or like the sense of longing at the window in the afternoon.just as the scarlett in the gone with the wind said, tomorrow is another day.secondly, i also want to get the conclusion that every woman is an individual figure. she has the right to chase freedom and independence.through her effort she can realize self-fulfilment.all the people in our society should respect 1.Research TopicThis study will show how Carla and Scarlett awaken female consciousness, processes of the awakening and the different results of their female consciousness.In addition, in modern society the discrimination against women still exists.So this thesis will analyze how the society and people around influence them and analyze the conditions that women need to waken the female consciousness. Furthermore, the study of feminism is conducive to break the block, strengthening the understanding of the feminine personality..2. Research MethodsThe study mainly uses the methods of feminist perspective interpretation.In this way, the connotation of the novel has become prominent.Besides, Contrast is alsoadopted.By comparing the female protagonist's female consciousness awakening to show their similarities and differences, the figures can be more vivid.Also, a list about the differences, the men and women around the female protagonists, and how they influence them will be given.
