1. 研究目的与意义（文献综述）

william faulkner is one of the most influential writers in theamericasouth literature. natured in mythical literature, he was greatly influenced by the christian cultural. as one of ‘the most profound christian writers” in the 20^th century, he used the biblical myth of the prototype in many of his works and tried to find a place where the american southerners who got lost in the social values could go. one of the most typical examples isthe sound and the fury, which describes the historical context of the society in the. american south and reveals the fall, evil and dim hope of the south.

most critics study this novel from perspectives of racial ideology, stream of consciousness, multiple-narrative methods or psychological analysis. however, the studies about biblical elements in faulkner’s work fewer than the former ones. some of them try to study the novel from an archetypal perspective. on the basis of northrop frye’s theory on archetypal criticism, they associate this novel with biblical archetypes on some separate aspects, such as characters, image and theme. they focused on probing the influence of the bible on this novel and increased the mystery of the novel. by combining those images in this novel with their symbolic meaning in the bible, they may describe and discuss many themes about the south, such as racism, slavery, the corruption of the old south and so on. some of them try to investigate the structural features or narrative patterns of the sound and the fury in comparison with those in the bible. they point out the four parts of the sound and the fury is enlightened by the ideas in the gospels of the new testament. they also found out that the mythological pattern and contrast system in the sound and the fury are related with the new testament. at the aboard, many scholar regard this novel as a story about the fall of the modern people. they study it from the deeper perspective that katie is not draw from the garden of eden, but force to go downfall by the loveless family. thus, they exposed the process of the decadence and dissolution of this family, as well as the social significance of conflicts between tradition and reality. so, most of them study this novel from image, structure, writing techniques and theme separately, and they cannot connect those biblical elements in this novel to its realistic meaning.

in this paper, the author tries to make a further study on the biblical elements in the sound and the fury. instead of investing this novel from the biblical archetype from the theme and image, the author tries to study its biblical factors in a more realistic perspective, thus extract its mystical meaning and realistic meaning. the author analysis from some aspects such as the date meaning, the environment, the death in this novel, the symbolical meaning of the smell of the tree and so on. those will help others more easily to understand the context of this novel and its deeper meaning and provide an insight into this family.

2. 研究的基本内容与方案

This paper consists of five parts. The author clarifies the research background and meaning, the generally relationship between the biblical cultural and William Faulkner. In the second part, The author analysis several biblical images in this novel, such as the name of the characters, the water, trees and the fragrance of the tree, the fire. In the third part, The author introduces the mode of this novel and its biblical meaning, which include the date, the writing perspective and the setting of the environment. In the forth part, by analyzing the developing of this family, The author study this novel’s deeper theme. In the last part, The author summarizes the whole passage, also the influence of this writing style.
