1. 研究目的与意义（文献综述）

since the secondhalf of 18th century, plenty of foreign classic literature works have floodedinto our country, and a large number of excellent translators emerged at thattime who introduced us the so-called “world masterpieces”. however, chineseclassic literature works that were introduced abroad are much less than thoseforeign literature works that were introduced in. compared with today’s rapideconomy and society development, cultural communication cannot be too delayed,for the cultural status plays an important role in china’s internationalstatus. thus, intercultural communication is significant for today’s china totruly improve her soft power. translation, especially literary translation, isthe base of intercultural communication. as literary translation involves somany aspects, this paper aims to probe into the translation of terms of addressin two english versions of a dream of redmansions.

the case of thestudy in this paper, hong lou meng (a dream in red mansions, also called thestory of the stone because of its another chinese name of shi tou ji), composedby cao xueqin, is one of china’s four great classic novels. it was written inqing dynasty when the chinese novel had maturely developed. a dream in redmansions is the representative work of the traditional literature and the peakof classic novels in our country. in addition, there have been already two englishversions of this great novel: one is a dream in red mansions translated by yangxianyi and his wife gladys yang from britain, and another is the story of thestone translated by david hawkes and his son-in-law john minford. thus, thereare enough materials for the comparative study on the translation of a dream inred mansions. consequently, a dream inred mansions was chosen to be the study object of this paper. since themeanings of address in the novel are very abundant, lots of redologists (theexperts of a dream in red mansions study) have already studied the chinesemeanings of those terms of address before it was translated into english, letalone the translation of them. currently, not many researchers combine thestudy of translation with intercultural communication at home and abroad. what’smore, few studies on the translation of terms of address are from the interculturalcommunication perspective.

this paper aimsat making its own contribution to the english translation of chinese classicliterature masterpieces. it is well known that the terms of address in chineseare quite different from those in english due to the huge gap between the englishculture and chinese culture and there is no one-to-one correspondence betweenthem; therefore the translation of terms of address shall be a tough problemfor translators when they are doing the literary translation. through the studyon the translation of terms of address, the author hopes to help the englishlearners when they read or study the english versions of chinese traditionalliteratures. chinese traditional literature needs a bridge to be introduced tothe world; perhaps the translation from the intercultural communicationperspective can become its bridge.

2. 研究的基本内容与方案

this paper will makesome comparative study on the translation of the terms of address in the twoenglish versions of hong lou meng. itwill adopt the methods combining empirical description with theory analysis. themethods mainly includes the following three aspects: first, the author willresearch and analyze the literature, carefully read, study, and analyze thedomestic and foreign literature related to translation theories to firmly graspthe translation theory study development trend of the mainstream, find anddissect the limitations of existing study, and seek the entry point of it. second,based on the skopos theory, the author will apply the descriptive translationresearch method to analyze and explain the social history culture function –that is, translation of the terms of address will be put into interculturalcommunication context, and the author will inquiry translation activities(including translation of the main body – activities of the translators) fromthe macro, dynamic, and external perspective. third, the paper will also focuson the translations of the same terms of address in different contexts. theauthor aims at summarizing and comparing the various measures of the addresstranslations, so as to offer some help for english learners who are interestedin chinese classic literature translation.
