1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述)

the intention of this study is, firstly, to examinethe ideas about art expressed in the novel thepicture of dorian gray by author oscar wilde. secondly, to analyze howoscar wilde has demonstrate the principle of aestheticism throughout his novel.

oscar wilde (1854-1900) is one of the most famousfigures linked to literary aestheticism. he is generally viewed as acontroversial symbol for aestheticism. he is famous for writing poems, plays, short stories, criticism and one novel, thepicture of dorian gray, written during his late career (first published in1890 and revised in 1891). it is one of the most studied novels of the time.being a shocking challenge to the society, it has provoked many controversialopinions and critics. in the closing years of the morally structured victorianperiod, the art-obsessed aesthetic movement began to take root in society. tothe aesthetes, the ultimate virtue was artistic beauty, and they strove toinstill it in every physical medium of their world, believing aestheticism tobe “both a literary philosophy and a guide for everyday life”. the mainproponent of this movement, oscar wilde, applied aestheticism to his writing.the book, the picture of dorian gray,is crafted with obvious appreciation for the aesthetic lifestyle; however, itis difficult to discern whether the main object of the story is the pursuit ofunreal and artistic things or the evasion of reality. it is impossible todiscuss oscar wilde’s work without introducing the subject of aestheticism, ashe is considered the figurative father of the aesthetic movement, and hispicture of dorian gray is simply ruled by the philosophy.
