1. 研究目的与意义（文献综述）

with the rapiddevelopment of society, especially for our country, we are gradually enteringthe aging society. the official statistics indicate that the number of peopleover sixty years old has accounted 15.5 percent in 2014. therefore, old menhave become an important group in society. however, for the most of the time,the aged are still ignored. now that old men belong to the weak group, weshould attach much importance on them, including their physical and mentalhealth. at present, we may be trying to do something for these aged to improvetheir life quality, such as the health care, but ignoring their psychologicalcare. most research reveals that mental health’s contribution is far greaterthan material satisfaction to old men’s happiness. thus, it is important for usto know the aged as well as their spiritual demands.

this paper aims toanalyze the spiritual demands of the aged from the humanistic perspective, andthe topic is closely related to the current social phenomenon. the road from colonus written by e.mforster reflects many themes. in terms of this paper, it mainly stands at theold man’s point of view, and combining it with the humanism.

there are manyanalyses about the road from colonus,but less of them analyze the spiritual demands of the old man from thehumanistic perspective. for example, wangjing ever wrote an article, displacement and degradations of characters:comparative studies on the road from colonous and oedipus at colonus, whichmainly analyzes the displacement and degradations of characters from thestructural perspective and also it reveals the deep irony under the view of thegreek tragedy. another example, a literature review named the brief analysis of humanism on the road from colonus written bytang xin zhu only analyze the story from the general humanism, such asunderstanding and peace, the dignity of the human, liberty and responsibility,and respecting for the nature, and so on. these analyses are all under theguide of the general humanism instead of analyzing it in details. in addition,an article named the psychologicalanalyses of the old man on the road from colonus from the magazine justmainly studies on the old man’s mental state through the conflict between mr.lucas and his daughter, but the topic is only confined to that story and theauthor didn’t apply it to the modern society.

generally speaking, the main content of theresearch includes the following aspect. firstly, the paper will analyze thepsychology of the old man. this analysis is important since that people ofdifferent ages are quit different in psychology. secondly, the spiritualdemands of the aged are also generated. in addition, the research includes theproblem of the aged people in current society. besides, the english humanism in20^th century is also deeply discussed, because it may be closelyrelated to the thought of the e.m forster’s writing. what’s more, the betterways of communication with the aged people as well as defending their dignityare studied.
