1. 研究目的与意义（文献综述）

Language, which can reflect historical and cultural background, lifestyle, social values and traditions of a nation, is the carrier of culture and the reflection of society. On every Christmas day, the British Queen will deliver a Christmas speech to celebrate Christmas, invigorate the whole nation and strengthen the national sense of unityandpride. The charm of the speech not only lies in the grand ceremony, the sacrosanct and aristocratic temperament, and the pure British accent, but also in the exquisite language, historicaldepth and reflection of continuous development of the society, which catches the attention of the whole world. As the longestreigning monarchinBritishhistory, the Queen still keeps the British tradition to deliver her speech, thus achieving intimacy and inspiring the country. Due to the solemnity and significance of the Queen, the Christmas speeches by the British Queen are representative examples to explore British cultural connotation. For the purpose, this paper shall make an analysis of Christmas speeches so as to show the characteristics of the British history, culture, religion and social values.

With the development of the economic globalization, the world is becoming more closely connected, which in turn promotes the exchange of bilateral economy and culture. On one hand, the study of British cultural connotation can promote our English study. As is known to all, learning a language does not just refer to the study of basiclanguageknowledgeandskills, it also includes the study of its cultural connotation. The learners can communicate with others in another language with basic language skills, but cannot engage deep communication concerning cultural connotation. A majority of English learners just achieve a superficial understanding of the speeches when getting access to them but without full understanding their implications. That is because the Queen cites many historical events and Bible which are the traditional culture of Britainand make it difficult. Understanding the cultural connotation will no doubt accelerate the speed of learning English. On the other hand, it can help us appreciate the endless charm of British culture, improve our cultural deposits and promote the multicultural development ofChina. The Christmas speeches are the epitome of British culture and reflect the cultural features from various aspects, such as history, religion, aristocratic culture and social values. In the process of accumulating abundant culture, it can broaden our horizon and open our mind to allow the combination of different cultures. Discarding the dross and selecting the essence can enrich our native culture and promote the development of Chinese culture.

Christmas speeches by the British Queen have drawn many people’s attention. There are many researches on Christmas speeches, and a majority of them focus on linguistics such as discourseanalysis, cohesivedevices analysis, translation, etc. In respect of President’s speeches, the relevant studies cover American presidential inaugural address. However, there are several studies focusing on the British cultural connotation. Conforming to this situation, this paper shall expound the Christmas speeches by the Queen from a new point of view—cultural connotation.

2. 研究的基本内容与方案

Due to the significant influence of the British Queen, her Christmas speeches will serve as the representative example to explore British cultural connotation. Her speeches are characteristic of the recalling of history, the depiction of Christmas stories, the aristocratic culture, and the social values, which are all the reflection of British culture. The analysis of British cultural connotation shall be carried out from the following aspects: major historical events, relevant religious belief, aristocratic culture and social values involved in the speeches. Through the research of Christmas speeches from point to surface, we can improve our English, appreciate the endless charm of British culture, improve our cultural deposits and promote the multicultural development of China.

In this paper, the author shall adopt the following methods. The first one is data-collection method. The latest three years’ Christmas speeches by the Queen shall be collected as the object of the study. The second one is literature research. In order to write a precise and novel paper, the author shall refer to various literature and books to have a comprehensive understanding of the related topics. The third one is qualitative analysis. The different topics mentioned by the Queen shall be analyzed and summarized so that the relevant cultural connotation can be distinct. The last one is exemplification. A lot of examples shall be given to illustrate the cultural connotation. For the purpose of searching for more accurate and useful materials, the author shall make full use of the resources on website, on magazines and in libraries.
