1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述)
With the advent of globalization,Gothic novels have arisen a heated controversy both across the public and academia between western countries and eastern countries. The representative novel “ Dracula” written by the elite late-Victorian man Bram Stoker is my favorite vampire novel, which deserves deeply study in the area of Gothic literature. Stoker visited the English town of Whitby in 1890 and that visit is said to be part of the inspiration of his great novel Dracula. While manager for Henry Irving and secretary and director of London's Lyceum Theater, he began writing novels, beginning with The Snake's Pass in 1890 and Dracula in 1897. During this period, Stoker was part of the literary staff of the The Daily Telegraph in London, and wrote other fiction, including the horror novels The Lady of the Shroud (1909) and The Lair of the White Worm (1911). In 1906, after Irving's death, he published his Personal Reminiscences of Henry Irving, which proved successful, and managed productions at the Prince of Wales Theater. Before writing Dracula Stoker met ármin Vámbéry, a Hungarian writer and traveler. Dracula likely emerged from Vámbéry's dark stories of the Carpathian mountains. Stoker then spent several years researching European folklore and mythological stories of vampires.Dracula is an epistolary novel, written as a collection of realistic, but completely fictional, diary entries, telegrams, letters, ship's logs, and newspaper clippings, all of which added a level of detailed realism to the story, a skill Stoker had developed as a newspaper writer. At the time of its publication, Dracula was considered a "straightforward horror novel" based on imaginary creations of supernatural life. "It gave form to a universal fantasy . . . and became a part of popular culture. It is rarely known that Dracula is created by a real historical character who is widely known as Vlad the Impaler means demon in Romanian, a cruel ruler always torture prisoners with impalement. In the history of English literature, it is difficult to find any kind of literature movement can keep up with Gothic novels , which can assemble so many social focuses and conflicts. Strictly speaking, British Gothic novel studies of Western countries began in1950s. While the critical mass since 1970s brings about their greater growing in depth, they show loopholes such as heterogeneous argument and expansive definition. And in China, the studies have just made a start . It is necessary for us to sort out the accomplishment of western countries and adopt the useful “ two -combining-method” of the genre with the context of the society, history and culture, and the modern theories with the text-reading, so as to break through the approach to the field. The most important way to change the current situation of our country’s backwards in the field of English Gothic Novels is combing the existing achievements of western countries, because any research need to be built on the basis of the finished ones.
