e.m. forster is afamous english novelist, short story writer, essayist and librettist of thetwentieth century. he wrote many works including where angles fear to tread, aroom with a view, the longest journey, howards end and aspects of the novel. and he is known best for his ironic andwell-plotted novels examining class difference and hypocrisy in early twentiethcentury. forster is also a humanist, his views as a humanist are at the heartof his work, which often depicts the pursuit of personal connections in spiteof the restrictions of the contemporary society, his humanistic impulse towardunderstanding and sympathy may be properly summed up in the epigraph to hisnovel howards end: “only connect”. a roomwith a view is his most optimistic work, while a passage to india brought his most success.

referring to a passage to india, it is different fromforster’s other works. in this novel, forster skillfully describes the conflictand tension between two countries with different culture and race. thealienation and conflict between nations, religions and individuals are muchmore long-lasting compared with the temporary connections between nativeindians and anglo-british. since its publication, the critics has studied itfrom various perspectives, such as from the perspective of post-colonialism,ecocriticism, new-historicism and so forth. various focuses of criticism on thenovel reflect the complexity and richness of the novel. it is also a proof thatthis book is great and charming and deserved to study.
