1. 研究目的与意义（文献综述）

it is a challenge fortranslators to make audience understand the meaning of directors or authors andenjoy the films like the native audience with a limit of time and space. thepurpose of this paper is to analyze the feasibility of functional equivalencein subtitle translation. recent years, both foreign and china scholars paytheir attentions to subtitle translation and some strategies of translation.

actually, the researcheson subtitle translation in west, especially in europe, started earlier thanchina. in the initial phase, the first article discussing audiovisualtranslation(avt), was published in babel titled cinema and et traduction in 1960s. christophoer titford(1974), provides the concept “constrainedtranslation” which has a profound influence on subtitle translation research.then, in 80s and 90s, functional equivalence theory emerged and developedrapidly. there are two representatives in this field, katharine reiss and hansvermeer. reiss considers that an ideal translation should be equivalent to thesource text in terms of content, language form and communicative function. buthe also realizes the source text and the target text are serving to differentaudience. vemeer proposes skopos theory, which means translation is an actionwith an aim that would cause a consequence. another scholar is christianenord(1988), an icon in german functional theory, whose biggest contribution isthe proposal of functional translation typology and loyalty principle which isabout relationship between a translation and the corresponding source text. nord gives specific models fortext analysis from perspective of text in text analysis in translation:theory, methodology and didactic application of a model fortranslation-oriented text analysis. in recent years, mark schuttle worthand moira cowie(2000) included the main ideas of skopos theory in the dictionaryof translation studies. d. bannon(2009) points out that subtitles deal withwhat is seen and heard in subtitling: the role of trans-model translation inglobal cinema.

compared with abroadstudies, there are fewer theoretical and practical research in china. china’sresearches on subtitle translation have been over half a century since 1949.thechinese scholars’ main research fields are translation standard, languagefeatures of films, movie title translation and so on. zhang chunbo(1989) points out that thelanguage of films has its own features, immediacy and popularity and thedifferences between non-literary translation and literary translation areconstraints in number of words, actions and characteristics of actors in firstdiscussion about film translation. qian shaochang(2000), in his articletitled film translation: the increasingly important domain in translationstudies, conducts that there are five features of film and tv language:audibility, comprehensiveness, immediacy, popularity and no-note. in zhaochunmei(2002)’s view, there are four kinds of contradictions in subtitletranslation, which includes length and content, word order and picture,localization and internationalization, transliteration and semantics. anotherscholar, li yunxing(2004), points that the most important and principal task ofsubtitle translation is to offer the most relevant information in the mosteffective way in his article strategies for translation subtitles. inspite of being at a beginning stage, china’s subtitle translation study isreceiving more attention and has a bright future.

2. 研究的基本内容与方案

Unlike the rest fields in translation, the subtitletranslation has constraints in time and space. The paper will focus on theanalysis of subtitle translation from perspective of functional equivalencetheory. More specifically, based on Skopos theory, the paper will analyze thefactors which may have influence on translators choosing strategies. Beisdes,the paper will apply Nida’s functional translation theory which is definitionand nature of translation from a functional perspective, role of participant intranslation process and rules in Skopos theory to opening up a new perspectivefor translation studies. what’s more, case study will be used to explore thesubtitle translation from the perspective of functional equivalence theory. Inorder to find out theory applications of functional equivalence in Fengxiaogang’s comedies, the author would like to analyze some translation examplesin Feng Xiaogang’s films: From Big Shot’s Funeral and If You Are the One Iand A World Without Thieves.
