1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述)
there is an increasing number of foreign films have been introduced to china in the last decade, the subtitle translation has become one of the major focuses in the field. unlike other forms of translation, subtitling featured with strong time and space restriction, which means it has to be synchronized with the original subtitle frame by frame both in word length and movie image with appropriate time background. based on these restrictions, it is hard to convey the meaning of the film effectively and accurately. because when dealing with cultural default information, translator should not only concern the equivalent of basic meaning but also the cultural connotation.
in many western countries, research on film subtitle translation have been done since early times. in 1991, luyken and other four experts from europe co-wrote the book overcoming television language barriers, discussing the conversion of language mode in subtitling translation. after 1995, western film translation developed rapidly. and the european society for translation studies, an international non-profit organization that promotes research on translation and localization emerged, their recent published papers include tracks and trecks in translation studies, and doubts and directions in translation studies. and in recent years, there is an increasing number of academic papers about subtitle translation published on famous journal such as target, meta, the translator and babel, which marked the start of dealing with audiovisual translation. up till now, the western’s research is much more specific. in 2001, gambier and gottlieb co-edited multi media translation which collected many research papers on film subtitling, stating this is a more complicated translation due to polymorphic nature of the audiovisual programs. furthermore, the westerners put much emphasis on quality control over subtitle translation.
2. 研究的基本内容与方案
This thesis analyzes English-Chinese subtitling in the qualitative analysis with a case study of How I Met Your Mother from the aspect of cultural default. Firstly, basic introduction of cultural default is made in details, including definition, causes and functions. Detailed information such as former studies about cultural default and subtitling strategies are also mentioned. Secondly, examples from How I Met Your Mother are extracted. They are classified into tech-economic cultural default, social cultural default, ideal cultural default, lingustic cultural default and so on. And this part aims to elaborate different kinds of cultural default that exist in subtitling, their own unique features and their connections to each other. Finally, several translation techniques concerning cultural default are listed, which includes cultural transposition, cultural note, foreignization, generalization and cultural omission. These strategies which are employed under different circumstances may provide reference for future subtitling. However, due to the limitation of time, it may not easy to pick up examples completely, and presuambaly the categories of cultural defualt listed are not classified as specifically as they can be.
