doris lessing is one of the most important british novelists, and was awarded the 2007nobel prize forliterature. at the same time, she is honored as the greatest female writer after virginia woolf. the golden notebookwhich is her outstanding work is the story of writer anna wulf, the four notebooks in which she records her life, and her attempt to tie them together in a fifth, gold-colored, notebook. the book intersperses segments of an ostensibly realistic narrative of the lives of molly and anna, and their children, ex-husbands and lovers—entitled free women—with excerpts from anna's four notebooks, colored black (of anna's experience in southern rhodesia, before and during wwii, which inspired her own best-selling novel), red (of her experience as a member of the communist party), yellow (an ongoing novel that is being written based on the painful ending of anna's own love affair), and blue (anna's personal journal where she records her memories, dreams, and emotional life).

in view of eco-feminism, this paper will study lessing’s objective comprehension about free women and identify her creation motivation by analyzing the background and setting of the story, the personalities and experience of heroine, and the effects of other character. through this analysis, this paper will present two methods to resolve the confusion of femalelost ego. and this viewpoint also conforms to the view of freefemalewhich is advocated by lessing. firstly, women should abandon the parochial feminism. it is the harmony between male and female that is beneficial to the development of feminine self-consciousness and statue. secondly, women can call upon the peace in the world, the equality of the world, the protection of ecology and the construction of the society to regain ego. because a harmonious society is a fair society, and an important social environment for female development.

the paper also has its practical significance. the first one is that it consists with the wave of building a harmonious society. in other words, it has epoch topic. the other one is that it will help female to solve family problems, employment problems and so on. otherwise, it may can attract general attention to female being abused.
