1. 研究目的与意义（文献综述）

the famous british contemporary writer victoria hislop had earlier in daily telegraph and many other mainstream british media as a columnist, who also had accumulated a profound literary skills. and the island is hislop's first attempt to interpret life, which preceded her latter works. thus, the sunday express hailed as "the new captain corelli's mandolin". though victoria hislop is not known as a writer all around the word, her work the island is a good work that implies hisiop’s commitment and dedication to life, which has aroused the reader's sympathetic passion. that’s the reason why it has owned millions of readers. the island just can cleanse flashy contemporary soul, and give the world an original inspiration of life. and her second novel, the return, was also a sunday times number one bestseller, and her books have been translated into more than twenty languages.

in 2006, victoria hislop published her debut the island that caused a great sensation, quickly jumped up selling book championship. although this novel has come into notice over recent years, few people have studied this work. hislop isn’t a productive writer who has only four novels so far, which is the island, the return, the thread, and the sunrise.

although ten years have passed since its publication, the research into this novel is quite limited. there are only few book reviews about this novel in ebsco and other foreign language databases. for example, kirkus reviews has only studied the history and heartbreak of the island. those limited researches has been conducted on the novel’s textual meaning.

2. 研究的基本内容与方案

my paper consists of five parts. in the first part, i will introduce the author and the novel. the related study on this novel abroad and at home will also be introduced. in the second part, i will analyze the characters and fighting destiny of the narrator’s grand grandmother, eleni. in the third part, i will talk about some aspects that reveal the destiny of her grandma aunt, maria and her grandmother anna in an amoral but objective way. in the forth part, i will emphasize the mental changes of, sophia and her daughter, alexis, the narrator in this novel. in the last part, i will summarize the whole passage, i will put forward expansion sense of rebirth and solve the mentioned key problem of narrow mental space. also bring up some essentialconnotations of rebirth in modern society.
