1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述)

this paper focuses on two chinese versions of stray birds, a collection of poems written by the famous indian poet rabindranath tagore. tagore is known widely as the first nobel laureate from asia and won the nobel prize in literature in 1913. stray birds is a collection of words and thoughts which is highly recommended for those who are longtime fans of the writings of rabindranath tagore and also for those who are beginning to just discover his amazing, inspirational words and thoughts for the first time. since the may 4th period, tagore’s poems has been translated into chinese.

in this paper, one chinese version of stray birds is produced by zheng zhenduo, a scholar of the early 20th century, whose translation of stray birds has been the most classic and widespread version in chinese literary field; the other version is produced by feng tang, a modern translator, who has recently published a chinese version of stray birds in an entirely different translation style. however, since the content of feng tang’s version is regarded to be either sublime or vulgar, it has been a controversy since its publication in the literary and translation field, and later the books have been recalled from every physical and online bookstore. by comparing the words, phrases and sentences as well as the structure of poems, this paper intends to analyze the distinct translation features and styles of these two chinese versions of stray birds. and with the comparison and analysis, this paper intends to discuss whether feng tang’s version is an appropriate translation in literary and translation field, involving discussions about the development or trend of chinese translation field.

the comparison of two versions of translation is a very common subject for literary theses at home and aboard. as for the subject about the comparison of two chinese versions of translation, it was done most by chinese scholars because the language limitation. because zheng zhenduo’s translation of stray birds has been the most classic and widespread version in chinese literary field, his edition of translation has been analyzed from many perspectives, such as polysystem theory, manipulation theory, rhetoric, stylistic europeanization, translating theory and techniques, aesthetic representation, deconstruction, etc. however, feng tang’s version was published at the end of 2015, which is a total new interpretation of stray birds and has been a controversial issue on account of its unique translation style. although there are many critical comments or reports about it, the research papers or theses are little. as we can see, the analysis of zheng zhenduo’s edition of translation is a very popular and widely-analyzed subject in researches and theses, but the analysis of feng tang’s edition of translation has not been written as a subject of theses yet, so the discussion of the different translation styles of zheng zhenduo’s and feng tang’s versions of stray birds is a brand new research direction. by comparing their different translations of the same word, phrase, sentence, their different translation styles of the poems’ structural forms, their different usages of translation approaches like literal translation and free translation, we can find out the different understandings and expressions of tagore’s minds and emotions in zheng zhenduo’s and feng tang’s editions, and the different poetry aesthetics they create in the translated poems. in consideration of the status of stray birds in literary field and the instinctive translation style of feng tang’s version, this is a subject that worthy of studying.

2. 研究的基本内容与方案

This paper mainly discusses the different translation styles of Zheng Zhenduo’s and Feng Tang’s versions of Stray Birds. From the translation features of words, phrases and sentences as well as the structure of poems, this paper intends to make a comparison of these two versions to analyze their instinctive translation styles and features, and further discuss about the appropriateness of Feng Tang’s version and the outlook as well as the tendency for Chinese translation field.

As for the research methodology, literary research method, reading method, theoretical study, case study and comparative analysis will be adopted in this paper. Firstly literary research method and reading method will be used to look for the useful information or academic theories from related books, journals and data from the library and on the internet. With the help of these basic information and theories, theoretical study and case study will be used to analyze Zheng Zhenduo’s and Feng Tang’s translation of Stray Birds. Some translation samples will quoted in order to help elucidate and exemplify. And then, comparative analysis method will be adopted to find the difference of the instinctive translation styles and features of these two editions. At last, conclusion and expectation will be made in the end of the paper.
