Modal particles in different kind of languages have similar application. For example, they are used to express tense, tones and even some potential meanings in the exact context. How to use them in the writing to make articles become more colorful and interesting is a kind of art. Comparing with other languages, Chinese prefer to use modal articles to explain some veiled meaning. Modal particles, such as Ma(吗), Le (了),Ne (呢) and so on, play an important role in Chinese language. From the ancient times to nowadays, there are some studies about the using of modal particles, such as the using of modal particles in Journey to the West, which is a well-known novel in Chinese. Moreover, many scholars study on the modal particles in the famous Chinese classical novel Dream of Red Mansions, which fully shows a China ancient society. In addition, some English modal particles are also a popular research topic, such as “well”. A number of scholars indicate that modal particles are widely-used not only in the essays but also in spoken language. Furthermore, how about study on the modal particles in translations. Searching from the internet and library, I have found that the study relevant to modal particles in translations is rare. My paper can enrich this study field. Using different modal particles in the same translation sentence can show very different meanings. Which words can we choose to explain the exact meaning? It is a question deserving our study. This paper is to take the modal particles in Moment in Peking as an example to discuss the utilization of modal particles in English-Chinese translation by analyzing the meaning of the modal particles in the exact context. I choose it as my paper topic because of some reasons. Firstly, the study of the application of modal particles is expected to enhance not only our comprehension about an essay, but also our translation. Secondly, I try to distinguish the exact meaning of some modal particles and compare them with each other to excavate Chinese far-reaching culture. Finally, it is a way to introduce our special modal particles culture to more people and to heighten their influence. From this paper, we can see that Chinese is an extensive and profound language. We can get to various modal particles as well as learn to use them. We can understand the meaning of articles more well when we are reading. But the most important thing is that we can utilize modal particles to simplify and beautify our language when we do translation according to our grasp of them. I believe that a perfect translation work include its idiomatic language and exact meaning. In conclusion, the study of modal particles may help us to grasp expertly the quintessence of Chinese language and we will master the translation of English-Chinese better. The more modal particles we learn, the more we know, the better we can utilize.
