shirley jackson, as an eminent american writer, has always been regarded as one of outstanding writers. the lottery is her most famous gothic story and has been widely studied and researched by scholars from the perspectives of its themes, images, environment, feminism idea, and social impact. searching on cnki, i can find that a quite few papers and dissertations analyze this novel in terms of discussing the aspects of collective unconsciousness and community violence in the novel arbitrary condemnation and sanctioned violence in shirley jackson's the lottery, and religious reflection of this short novel in the paper islam in shirley jackson's the lottery. so far, rare western scholars research into the detailed processes of developing scapegoat.

unlike western scholars, chinese scholars are more interested in exploring the themes of scapegoat and feminism in the lottery, which is exemplified in a representative and a scapegoat: analysis of tessie hutchinson in the lottery by fuyu chen and the article a destined scapegoat: a feminism analysis of the stoning of tessie hutchinson in the lottery by shirley jackson by qinyan duan. besides, some chinese scholars also study the theme of underlying social problems. for instance, the article scapegoat from the aspect of collective unconsciousness emphasizes the social problems of the development of urbanization and capitalism’s impact on the mentality of citizens. although most chinese writers have already discussed the usage of scapegoat in the lottery, none of them have ever dug out the specific stages of scapegoat’s development in this novel.
