thetraditionalthemesoftessofthed’urbervillesthathavebeenstudiedincludethethemeofdestinedtragedy,therelationshipsbetweenenvironmentandcharacter,characterandfateinlightofancientgreektragedy,arthurschopenhauer’spessimistphilosophyandsomeprototypesinthebible.meanwhile,feminist,ecologicalandecofeministperspectiveshaveoftenbeenusedtoanalyzethisnovel.accordingly,somenewthemeshavebeenprobed,forexample,theimageofnewwomenunderpatriarchy,therelationshipbetweensexandmarriage,conflictbetweenindustrialdevelopmentandnaturalenvironment,thesignificanceofharmonybetweenhumanbeingandenvironment,harmonybetweenonepersonandtheotherandtheharmonywithinoneself.
generally,anovelcontainsseveralelementslikeplot,character,theme,pointofview,image,symbol,toneandsoon.amongthem,imageplaysanimportantroleinunderstandinganovel’sthemesandappreciatingitsform.imagesintessofthed’urbervillesthathavebeenanalyzedincludethebirds,thebookofgenesis,variantnamesofd’urbervilles,thehorseprince,thed’urbervillesfamilyvault,thefantasylandbrazilandsoon.however,thereisanothernoticeableimagerecurringinthewholestory---water,whichhasrarelybeenelaborated.inthisnovel,waterexistsintheformsoftheriversofblackmoorandfroom,thewaterofbaptismalsoincluded.waterastheessentialelementintheenvironmentandthedivinethinginitsreligioussenserepresentsthestateoftess’slife,reflectsherpsychology,denotestheunderlyingdanger,actsasadividinglineofherlife,removeshershameandsin,cleanshermiserablememoryawayandofferssalvationwhichareimpliedbythedepictionoftherivers,theusageofpunsandsomerepetitionlikethewords”wash”and”forget”.

thispaperconductstheanalysisofthesymbolicmeaningsandotherfunctionsoftheimageofwaterinthisnovelforthepurposeofbetterunderstandingthenovel’sthemesandappreciatingitsform.roughly,thepaperconsistsofthreeparts:introduction,bodyandconclusion.theintroductionparttouchesuponthebasicinformationoftessofthed’urbervillesanditsauthor,aliteratureoverviewincluded.besidesthat,themainideaandthestructureofthispaperaretobeintroducedinthispart.thebodyparthasfourchapters:theriverofblackmoorinthemaidenperiod,theriverasadividinglineoftess’life,theriveroffroomasahealingplace,thewaterusedtobaptizethechild.finally,theconclusionpartgivesanoverallillustrationonthispaper.
