since entering the new era, with the increasing trend of globalization, the focus of communication between different countries has changed from economy and politics to the exchange and integration of different cultures. movies function not only as a tool of entertainment but also an effective approach of accelerating international cultural communication. with the swift development of mass media and the whole society, many chinese directors have created various wonderful movies, which show the charm of chinese culture to the world. in order to ensure the quality of native movies and convey the intent of the creator, movie subtitle translation is particularly important. if the subtitles are translated appropriately, many excellent movies can be spread widely and enable more foreigners to understand the profound meaning behind them.

This paper intends to research functional equivalence theory in the application of movie subtitle translation as well as finding out strategies suitable for subtitle translation.

The author will take the movie Hi! Mom! as an example, and make a comprehensive analysis on subtitle translation from the perspective of functional equivalence theory. Through analyzing the subtitle translation on the level of lexical, syntax and rhetorical, the author will prove that functional equivalence theory is effective in the translation of movie subtitles.
