1. 研究目的与意义
gothic novel became a very popular genre for its mysterious and horrific elements at late 18th century. a large number of gothic novels were created during that period. with the rapid development of gothic novels, lots of female gothic novels have also emerged.
jane eyre, northanger abbey and wuthering heights all have typical female gothic features. however, throughout the studies at home and aboard, there are many scholars who study jane eyre and wuthering heights from the gothic perspective, but few people study them from the female gothic perspective. and there is even less research on the female gothic in northanger abbey.
so this thesis intends to make a comparative study of the three books to study their similarities and differences in female gothic writing and to make the readers better understand female gothic.

this thesis compares the female gothic in jane eyre, northanger abbey and wuthering heights mainly from the aspects of gothic settings, gothic happenings and gothic representation of characters such as villain hero, supernatural phenomenon and gothic female image. it will introduce the scholarships on these novels as well as on gothic origins. andconclusion is drawn based on the above analysis, showing the results, shortcomings of this research and its research prospects.

in 1847, charlotte bronte published the novel jane eyre, which made a splash in the literary world. through the description of heroine''''s life experience, it shows the inequality caused by the politics and status difference of the society at that time. huang[黄兴军](2009,pp.10-13) claimed that charlotte bronte succeeded in portraying a personality heroine dared to fight fate. through bumpy experience of jane, the author revealed the problem of women and appeal to strive for equality and freedom for women which opened a new chapter in women''''s literature. since the novel published, it has become a hot spot for scholars.
the domestic studies on the novel are quite a large number. in the past ten years, there have been nearly 2,000 articles on jane eyre analysis by chinese scholars. after 2009, scholars published more than 150 papers on jane eyre every year. they studied this work at the following aspects: the theme of the novel, the analysis of the characters and the comparative study. compared to domestic studies, the foreign scholars are more focused on studying from the perspective of literature, politics and history. in recent years, there has also been more study on the novel from female gothic aspect.
guo[郭敏](2008, pp.148-149) believed the writer had learned from the gothic tradition and made a breakthrough.with her extraordinary imagination, she perfectly combined the gothic elements such as terror, mystery and vitality which achieved the perfect unity of gothic form and passion.
