robinson crusoe is often credited as marking the beginning of realistic fiction as a literary genre, and is generally seen as a contender for the first english novel. since then, robinson has become the true prototype of the british colonist who has the whole anglo-saxon spirit: the manly independence, the unconscious cruelty, the persistence, the slow yet efficient intelligence, the sexual apathy, the calculating taciturnity. it has influenced various castaway novels and movies.
the movie cast away is often regarded as the modern robinson crusoe. it has lots of similarities and differences between robinson crusoe. both of them have discussed the struggles when the characters were left in an isolated island and the influence of the experience on their personalities.
the spirits and themes reflected in the book and the movie have important guiding value to our lives and the whole society.

As a well-known novel written by Daniel Defoe, Robinson Crusoe has raised many discussions. It marked the beginning of realistic fiction as a literary genre. Its success led to many imitators, and castaway movies. Many scholars have studies on the man#8217;s struggles against nature, the glorification of labor and the courage and will to face hardships. Martin J. Greif mentioned the Christian notion of providence, penitence and redemption in his article The Conversion of Robinson Crusoe. Professor Jin Liuchun praised Robinson as a practical bourgeoisie.
Cast Away has lots of descriptions on the struggles Chuck did, it reviews that man can defeat the nature depending on his own strength. It emphasized the importance of fighting for survival and man need to save himself even in an isolated environment.
