sister carrie and tess are both the controversial female images in the english and american literature.they seem to live in the same age and have the similar experience.there are many factors that can be compared.as an important and necessary element of growth, social environment has great influence on the development of a person#8217;s character and his awareness of reality.connecting the female images and social backgrounds will be an excellent angle to make a further study ofliterature.

The aim of essay is to look into the different social backgrounds.My paper will first focus on linguistic features of the main characters. Then we will find out different main character images.In the third part, make a comparison of different female images.The last part is the extending part of finding out the social factors which can explain all the phenomenon and main characters.
