1. 研究目的与意义
Wuthering Heights is the only novel written by Emily Bronte, an English writer in 19th century. It was born with satire: terrifying, horrible and disgusting. But later it is praised as the only novel whose splendor is not concealed by time. On the one hand, it is due to the deeper research which promotes the artistic value. On the other, the novel appeals to more modern readers. Wuthering Heights follows the tradition of Gothic novels and shows us a Gothic world full of imagination. The article starts discourse on its relation with Gothic novels and explores Gothic features reflected in classic works. Meanwhile, the cause forming the style is related to writer#8217;s experiences and social background. The experiences are decisive factor and political, economic and cultural factors also have huge influence. Through study, we can learn better about the social background at that time and the Gothic world described by Emily Bronte.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
The thesis intends to give a detailed analysis to the Gothic features in Wuthering Heights. It mainly consists of four parts: introduction, the Gothic literature and its theory, Gothic features in the novel, and conclusion. Firstly, the introduction is concerned with the present state of the relevant research, the purpose of this paper, and the significance of the chosen topic. Secondly, my paper will give a brief introduction of the Gothic literature and its theory. Then Gothic features in Wuthering Heights are the main part of this thesis. It consists of four parts, concerning the analysis at theme, nature environment, characters and plots. Finally, the conclusion summarizes this thesis. The thesis has two key points to deal with: what is the Gothic novels and how to compare these characters in the novel with Gothic views.
3. 国内外研究现状
The researches about Wuthering Heights at home and abroad are diversified. Some scholars tend to study the theme, such as Zhang Yujun(2005), who holds the view that the theme in this novel is multilevel. He reinterprets these themes like good and evil, crime and punishment, evil and retribution, etc. Some devote themselves to analysing the characters. For instance, Duan Yulan(2012), who thinks the protagonist--Heathcliff,is a man with the peculiarity of man and devil. He is endowed the sear of society and times. Duan takes the origin of Heathcliff#8217;s personalities as an entry point and deeply analyses his image. Other ones do some researches on Gothic features in the novel. Dong Jing(2007), points that the novel takes a large number of Gothic techniques, whose theme is the Gothic theme. The themes of Gothic novels most reveal the human evil and darkness through family enmity and fight for succession. And indeed, the theme of Wuthering Heights involves revenge, conspiracy and fight for succession. When studying the Gothic features in Wuthering Heights, the study angles are various, such as, female Gothic novel, inheritance and innovation of Gothic novel, Gothic image and comparison with Gothic features in Jane Eyre. With the further research, artistic value of Wuthering Heights will be promoted increasingly.
