thomas hardy is a famous english novelist andpoet. he is skilled at inspecting life in a tragic vision. he has shaped manyfemale roles in various kinds. in his novel, he shows his deep sympathy on thefemales that are oppressed by society and religion. he hopes that female can gainthe right to chase after happiness and freedom. among female characters he has portrayed,females always have foresight and modern sense while the tragedy was inevitableunder the patriarchal society.

tess is the heroine in tess of the d’urbervilles. she is also a tragic role in the novel. tessis a figure representing new women. hardy is deeply in love with tess becauseshe is a rebel to the society. this study will discuss the tragic sense offemale role in tess of the d’urbervilles.it will mainly focus on reasons why tess’s tragedy happened and where thetragic sense of female can be embodied in the text.
