Tess of the D#8217;Urbervilles is one of the great works of Britain writer Thomas Hardy and has received lots of attention all over the world since its publication. The heroine, a pure woman as the author described, is the epitome of the oppressed women who were subject to and controlled by the male of the Victorian era. Analyzing Tess#8217;s tragedy is a good way to understand the situation of the male-dominated society and the hypocritical social morality of the Victorian era.

This paper will give a brief analysis of Tess's tragedy from external and internal aspects, and try to conclude some enlightenment from Tess#8217;s tragedy. The first part will illustrate Tess's tragedy from different aspects. Then, the paper will focus on the analysis of the causes for the tragedy from several angles, such as social environments, religious influence, self-respect and fortitude, and self-sacrifice and independence. Finally, the inspiration from Tess#8217;s tragedy will be concluded.

There have been many researches on this book, such as analysis of the main characters, social and religious background of the book and author's opinions on male-dominance and feminist consciousness. Tess's tragedy achieved a lot of attention and many scholars have analyzed it to understand the Victorian patriarchal society and the injustice of social law, for example, Noorbakhsh Hooti from Razi University and , respectively have offered their opinions in The Apprehensive and Suppressed Soul of The Fall Women in Thomas Hardy#8217;s Tess of the D#8217;Urbervilles. Because the Victorian era was one of the important period of literature creating and had great influences on literature works, analyzing of Tess's tragedy is a good way to understand and reflect the situation of the male-dominated society and the hypocritical social morality. That is why I attempt to make a research on this topic.
